It is very easy to connect to MAC serial port, only one resistor is required (from Mac to PIC). As MAC serial line drivers are differential you have the option to choose the polarity. (Must be be correct) I wrote some PIC software drivers for 57.6 kbaud for PIC16C84 at 4MHz (Software Serial), for C74 you can use the hardware UART too.
