An Aussie came up with the 'rolling loop' film transport mechanism (which is what I had in mind, since it is the key to the whole concept - such large film would not stand up to the old jerky geneva mechanism). But, as you say, the enthusiastic Canadians developed this into a system (along with German optics, and sundry parts from all over the globe). Only Hollywood didn't have anything to do with it!
