Thanx to David and Brian on helping me find the problems here; I was following the programming instructions except that I was doing the first Send(1) as a 6 bit, followed by a 16 (or 14 depending on how you look at it) command, rather than a simple 6 bit command (as required). It was one of those where no matter how hard you stare at it, you'll never see it (unless you get *really* anal about it).
