Tim, the SED indicates Seiko-Epson, now known as S-MOS. The part number isn't on their standard products list or my '92/93 data book, it may be a custom. Thet consist of some circuitry, an 8 figure 7 seg display and 3 leds. On the bach there is one group of 4 pins, 2 of 2 pins and a lone pin. The device is the Rohm 257D and the surface mount chip on the back is labeled: SED5031Moa F02 513 JAPAN Any details of this device would be great - it looks like an excellent PIC display to me!
