I vote to keep the mailing list.  My only objection to gating it
to a news group is the Spam problem.  I recently got so mad at one
representative from the very shallow end of the gene pool that I wrote a
C program and UNIX shell script that returned 200 copies of his ad back to
him with the subject line of each composed of 20 random characters so that
he would really have to work to clear them.

        Most of them use bogus return addresses, but this idiot actually
wanted replies so he got them all right.  I also put a rule in .maildelivery
that dumped all mail from that site to /dev/null so I don't have any idea
what he did in return.

        Now, I have that Monty Python skit about Spam playing in my head.
