I agree the Hill and Horowitz book is good and suggest that the lab manual that accompany's it be purchased also. It not only has experiments but a lot of supplementary text as well. Another source to consider, depending on ones level, are the instructional material put out by Heathkit. While not inspired, it has a very thorough beginning explanation of the basics. While not a text, The CMOS Cookbook, while dated, still has a lot of excellent material on basic logic circuits, counters, shift registers, timers, analog switches, and phase locked loops at the practical, build it level.
