If you are going to do anything funky with an LCD (ie scrolling/shifting the display), don't go by the 40usec/1.6msec specifications - poll the Busy Flag (Bit 7 of the Instruction Port) of the LCD. I realize that this takes an extra pin (rather than just holding the R/W pin at a constant value), and a bit of extra code (actually about the same amount as a 160 usec dlay) but it will make sure everything works okay without a *lot* of the messy debug that I went through before breaking down and just putting it in when I was working with the LCDs.
