There is no way to tell the PROMATE which processor is being used (I wish there WAS), except by manually selecting it. Microchip representatives have make the excuse that the Intel file format doesn't allow for that capability. I believe PROMATE support is supposed to be added to MPLAB, but I haven't been able to get any answer from them as to when.
