It can be re-programmed thousands of times, each time in a few seconds with very cheap Printer Port driven hardware (basically a 7407 and power supply) and the software is free. It's considered the 'Newbie' starting point for PIC related projects, and can be run in a minimal configuration with just a power source and a single resistor and capacitor.
