You're right that a simple ASCII file could be sent as a message, but probably you'd get some trouble with the line length. The MIME encoding is not really dependent on the particular mail reader, it is pretty much a standard and seemingly taking over the place of uuencoding. You may get yourself a MIME encoder (lots of freeware around) and translate the file.
