The PIC14000 is too expensive and too big -- slightly overkill for what I need.

That was a great help! You're right, I'm in Brazil, and therefore I really
need online info. Distributors and representatives here tend to be not very
helpful, and usually they know less than I... even when I don't know almost
nothing about the topic.
