Async data depends really in the timing of your osc, so go for xtal no dobut and for the lower baudrate you can afford so you have less error and more time to do other tinghs. Async data is only a series of 0 & 1 that are timed each x msec that means there is a Start bit (1) at time 0 then at time 1x comes the MSB or LSB as you prefer and so on until bit 8 at time 8x and finally at time 9x a stop bit. BTW what kind of RF link you are using and what is the range, cost fost it?? Hope this helps a litebit!
