Well I have been meaning to start using the LMC1982 Digitally-Controlled Stereo Tone and Volume Circuit ... (name is too long :-) ) from National Semiconductor but have never gotten around to it. It has two channels and you can select between two different inputs. It is simple to interface, 3 lines - id, clock and data. I got the data sheet from their web page (it was listed a few messages back). There are others in the series as well LMC1983 and LMC1992. They aren't cheap, the LMC1982 lists a $9 at Digikey. Md
