Currently, the very highest brightness red LEDs are made by Mitsubishi Cable (800 262 6200), however, very good ones are offered by Marktech (Toshiba, 518 786 6591), Sharp (800 642 0261), Siemens Opto (408 777 4968), Stanley (, and others. Note that the brightness spec depends strongly on coverage angle. The easiest way to achieve a very high brightness spec is to narrow the angle by means of a longer focal length: brightness varies with the inverse square of coverage angle. That's one reason why the jumbo packages achieve higher brightness: they maintain low f# even with a longer FL.
