[...] You probably won't need a diamond drill for OTP devices, since they're in PLASTIC packages. Although it's true that the circuits are the same in both the OTP and windowed versions of a chip, I learned at a Microchip seminar that the "JW" dies undergo two extra "layer" operations which the OTPs don't. I'd guess that these may have something to do with protecting them from chemical exposure to the clear epoxy... but I'm only guessing. It may not be a good idea to expose the OTP die to the open air. ;-) And as for accessing the leads of broken pins, Jeez! C'mon guys! I've been installing and pulling 40-pin PIC16C65's two or three times per day for more than a month without even bending a pin ...and I'm using the handle of a teaspoon as an "extraction tool"!
