If memory serve me correctly( a rarity these days) ZIRCON is the manufacturer of
 this stud
finder. The chip is probably a custom. I believe that ZIRCON is a Canadian
 company or it
was in 1981 when I last used the ZIRCON. It can find the bones in you arms and
 legs too. I
don't think it has much range beyond a couple inches.

It sounds very much like it could be, would make a great obstacle
avoidance sesor for a robot.  How much would such a stud finder cost
and has anyone heard of a Chip fab that badges their ICs ZIRCON.

Is there contact information for the manufacturer of the studfinder,
they might have other products.
