What would be ideal > > Neil Gandler I don't know about low cost (but you do buy from Jameco) but the display you are describing is almost exactly the Siemens HDSP2000 series. There are 4 and 8 digit versions, either of which may be daisy chained (with no additional I/O) into longer strings. The digits are a 5x7 dot matrix, you provide the character generator. You supply the row data via shift clock and serial data inputs and you provide column drive for five columns. Multiplexing is 1/5 with one column (of all digits) at a time being active. PIC drive requires 7 I/O (or less with external shift register for col drive) and maybe 5 transistors. Siemens is distributed by Marshall. Check www.marshall.com - Mark Sullivan -
