Martin:

The FCC makes a very clear distinction between "control" signals and
"data" signals.  When you press the button on your garage-door
transmitter, you're sending a control signal.  If you were to use the
same transmitter to implement, for instance, wireless PC-to-PC
communications, you'd be sending data signals, and you'd be in
violation of the FCC rules.
