If it's any help, I'm currently writing software for the 16C84 to receive and decode IR from the current Sharp Electronics remote controls. So far I'm able to reliably receive the signals and turn LED's on accordingly. To receive the IR I'm using a small IR receiver IC from a TV, this has three connections, positive supply, earth, and data out. If you are interested please feel free to contact me.
