I have some spare I/O so I output diagnostic codes to flag the operation of individual segments of code. I also output results as needed so that I can check them. The logic analyzer is great because I can observe the external events as well such as serial access to an A/D. Logic analyzers are expensive but I found an old Tektronics DAS 9100 for $300 in an electronics salvage place. I don't think they knew what they had.
