Why not have the best of both worlds?

1) create a new *moderated* newsgroup
2) set the moderaters postbox alias to /dev/nul (to prevent posting to it)
3) subscribe the piclist via a mail2news server to that newsgroup
        IIRC alt.piclist@mail2news.demon.co.uk on our newsserver.

Then, people who want to read the piclist as a newsgroup, can do so, but
to post to it, they must continue via email as before, those who want
to stay in the mailing list are unaffected.

Pests trying to spam the ng cannot do so as their messages go into the
bitbucket.

I'm not sure what the people in alt.config (or wherever) will think of this
though....... /dev/nul as a moderaters mbox, tut tut tut :)
