On the positive side:

  Threaded newsreaders
  killfiles
  doesn't DEMAND immediate attention.
  While the overall posting level may stay or be about the same, the posting
    level from those who are competant will go up as they won't feel guilty
    about large posts to a newsgroup.
  less chance of killing the /var/spool/mail directory, not a biggy for those
    of us on Unix boxes, but a PC may be a different story.
