Hello.  I read piclist via the piclist-digest.  I have learned a lot from it.

I firmly believe that piclist would be harmed by moving it to a newsgroup.
Here are the negatives of a newsgroup:

  Delays of posting - sometimes many hours or more
  Possible missing messages when on vacation (my news server keeps
    messages less than a week)
  Lower quality of postings
  More junk (spam) postings
  No digest capability

Please leave piclist the way it is.
