The PICStart-16B1 which programs the '5x family also programs the '71 and '84. When this programmer came out these were the only midrange chips available and being 18 pin devices they were included with the '5x parts. With the introduction of the '64 and '74, both 40 pin devices, a new PICStart-16C was introduced to support all 40 and 28 pin midrange PICs. Since the '61 is basically a '71 with no A/D its programmer compatible with the '71 and may be programmed with the PICStart-16B1. As even more midrange parts become available we'll just have to wait for another of life's little mysteries to unfold and reveal how they'll be supported by PICStart.
