Stuff : The Materials the World Is Made of by Ivan Amato is a fantastic tour through the design and use of the everyday materials most of us take for granted, and on to the stuff of the future.

Six Easy Pieces by Richard P. Feynman is a lesson in physics aimed at the non-scientist and given by one of its finest and most entertaining teachers. Also available is a set accompanied by compact disc recordings of the actual lectures given in the 60's. Highly recommended to anyone who ever thought physics dull.

Six Not-So-Easy Pieces : Einstein's Relativity, Symmetry, and Space-Time by Richard P. Feynman, Robert B. Leighton (Editor) This is a jump into the next gear. These are Feynman's advanced lectures, dealing with the work of Einstein and later physicists, taught as only Feynman could teach it. Recommended for those with a basic grounding in physics (see above).

A History of the Sciences by Stephen Finney Mason is a good introduction to the history of scientific exploration and discovery.

Why Big Fierce Animals are Rare by Paul A. Colinvaux is a wonderful collection of essays concerning why things are the way they are in nature.

The Stars: A New Way to See Them by Hans Augusto Rey. Yes, this is the same H. A. Rey who gave us Curious George! This is the best book to give a beginner on the subject, young or old. Simple to use and very thorough. If you have any interest in the night sky, this really should be in your library. Also recommended is the companion volume, Find the Constellations

coverMake Your Own Dinosaur Out of Chicken Bones : Foolproof Instructions for Budding Paleontologists by Chris McGowan. This book is also listed in the "younger readers" section, but it is cool enough to list twice. How can anyone pass up a book like this? Very detailed description on building your own model apatosaurus skeleton from chicken bones. You will gain a much better idea of how dinosaur skeletons worked, and skeletons in general for that matter. Very cool indeed!

coverT-Rex to Go : Build Your Own from Chicken Bones by Chris McGowan is the sequel to "Make You Own Dinosaur..." and every bit as good. A challenging project, but won't your friends be impressed!
